The animation Nothing Occurred is now shot and moves to editing phase. The shooting took 103 hours in studio and the shutter has clicked about 5000 times during that time.

This mockumentary animation is only in Finnish. It was made for Meduusa TV’s fashion episode. Characters are hand-drawn and colored in Photoshop.

Here’s a portrait of a 1-year-old kid. If a client wants grayscale versions of the photos, I think they should always be more that just desaturated color images. There were total of 36 photos, so I had to be rather fast with the Photoshop, so that my work hours wouldn’t exceed what I’m being paid off. Thus I didn’t use any fancy adjustment layers; good old dodge and burn tools made the trick (and kicking the reds and oranges in Camera RAW’s HSL/Grayscale panel.)

Of course it isn’t a true b&w print made in a darkroom, and can’t really be compared to one, but.. it is digital-something that tries to make a small tribute to b&w photography.

The post production of Nothing Occurred will be done in 4K. In the beginning the frame is actually a bit bigger than 4K, since Nikon D700 makes a bit bigger image (4256×2832). This means 46 MB of data per every frame when I’m reading the full size images for NukeX and Ocula (stereoscopic fixing).

Let’s assume the film is 3 minutes (180 seconds). Everything will be doubled because of 3D. Thus the first stage of post production will take 46 MB x 12 fps x 180 seconds x 2 = 200 GB.

After this, I will render the (stereo)fixed image in 4K and 2K (latter for proxy.) These will take 39,8 MB x 12 x 180 x 2 = 171 GB and 10 MB x …. = 43 GB

So.. this far I will have used 414 GB of disk space.

Rest of the workflow needs testing, but let’s assume I will render 4K, 2K and Full HD for Premiere… in 24 frames per second. This would make 344 GB + 86 GB + 67 GB = 497 GB more. Total: 911 GB.

The first Finnish stereoscopic stop motion short movie, ‘Nothing Occurred’, is now in filming phase. Me, Eero Vihavainen and Sanna Peltola worked hard from Thursday to Monday, 12-14 hours a day. We succeeded to shoot all the interior shots, meaning that we are in schedule. Rest of the shots are exterior (fake exterior, of course), and will take 3 days to shoot plus 1-2 days to build the set.

I will propably write more about my workflow later, but here’s a short version about current events: I’m preparing the raw cut in 720p (2D, left eye only). The original 4256×2832 pixel frames are way too heavy for my computer. I would love to edit in 3D, but it is not possible with my software set (Adobe CS5 Production Premium). Thus I’m downsizing the images to 720p format for editing and then I’ll just apply the edit to full size frames, which will then be sent to NukeX for stereoscopic fixing. The final movie will be available in 4K resolution.

I was also the Director of Photography since I designed the (Rembrandt) lighting.

A Man. A Cyborg. A Border Control Employee.

These are portrait images of my stop motion character. He used to be a man working for border control office, now he’s a cyborg. Sad.

And some useless trivia: The human face has been photoshopped using client photographs; it’s a combination of two faces (and a liquify tool). His new eye is a CCD sensor from Nikon D1H. The clayguy’s inner part is made out of balsa tree; I found it from Kuopio, from a fishing equipment shop. The clay came from Worthing, England, and the package looked like a truck had driven over it, but luckily the clay was unbroken.
